A Reform and Conservative Synagogue Serving the Rivertowns
Two Graphic Novels:
A Contract with God: And Other Tenement Stories by Will Eisner
Originally published in 1978, the book is described as a collection of four short stories based on Eisner’s childhood memories. An intimate portrait of immigrant life in the 1930s Bronx, it is an homage to a vanished world — not a glorified past, however, but a past with all its faults and ugliness. The tragic main characters are all destined to fail, and each story presents a surprising twist at the end.
The Flying Couch by Amy Kurzweil
Described as a third generation Holocaust novel, the Jewish Book council calls it, “an extraordinary tapestry woven from both painful and uproarious family stories, dreamscapes, and other surreal flights of fancy (such as sequences in which the patriarch Jacob, Freud, and Herzl appear before the young artist with their incompatible agendas) and poignant episodes from Amy’s own Bildungsroman.”
