SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This monthÕs selection: How To Find Your Way in The Dark by Derek B. MillerTwelve-year old Sheldon Horowitz is still recovering from the tragic loss of his mother only a year ago when a suspicious traffic accident steals the life of his father near their home in rural Massachusetts. It is 1938\, and Sheldon\, who was in the truck\, emerges from the crash an orphan hell-bent on revenge. He takes that fire with him to Hartford\, where he embarks on a new life under the roof of his buttoned-up Uncle Nate. Sheldon\, his teenage cousins Abe and Mirabelle\, and his best friend\, Lenny\, will contend with tradition and orthodoxy\, appeasement and patriotism\, mafia hitmen and angry accordion players\, all while World War II takes center stage alongside a hurricane in New England and comedians in the Catskills. (From the publisher)\nDiscussion is led by a synagogue member. Whether meetings will be in person or on Zoom has not yet been determined. Please check the website for up-to-date information.

SUMMARY:Books@Night (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Antiquities by Cynthia OzickLloyd Wilkinson Petrie\, one of the seven elderly trustees of the now defunctÉTemple Academy for Boys\, is preparing a memoir of his days at the school\, intertwined with the troubling distractions of present events. As he navigates\, with faltering recall\, between the subtle anti-Semitism that pervaded the schoolÕs ethos and his fascination with his own familyÕs heritageÐin particular\, his illustrious cousin\, the renowned archaeologist Sir William Matthew Flinders PetrieÐhe reconstructs the passions of a childhood encounter with the oddly named Ben-Zion Elefantin\, a mystifying older pupil who claims descent from EgyptÕs Elephantine Island. From this seed emerges one of Cynthia OzickÕs most wondrous tales\, touched by unsettling irony and the elusive flavor of a Kafka parable\, and weaving\, in her own distinctive voice\, myth and mania\, history and illusion.
