DESCRIPTION:Join us for a moderated discussion about books with Jewish themes. This month’s selection: “The Heaven And Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride\nA NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK\nNAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NPR\, WASHINGTON POST\, AND TIME MAGAZINE\n“In 1972\, when workers in Pottstown\, Pennsylvania\, were digging the foundations for a new development\, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill\, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him\, it was Chona and Nate Timblin\, the Black janitor at Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill\, who worked together to keep the boy safe.”\nDiscussion moderated by a congregant.\n$3.00 suggested donation per guest.\nRSVP: (914) 631-1770 adulted@tba-ny.org

DESCRIPTION:This month’s selection: The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler’s Ghettos By Judy Batalion \nWitnesses to the brutal murder of their families and neighbors and the violent destruction of their communities\, a cadre of Jewish women in Poland — some still in their teens — helped transform the Jewish youth groups into resistance cells to fight the Nazis. Yet the exploits of these courageous resistance fighters have remained virtually unknown. Judy Batalion\, the granddaughter of Polish Holocaust survivors\, takes us back to 1939 and introduces us to Renia Kukielka\, a weapons smuggler and messenger who risked death traveling across occupied Poland on foot and by train. Joining Renia are other women who served as couriers\, armed fighters\, intelligence agents\, and saboteurs\, all who put their lives in mortal danger to carry out their missions. Batalion follows these women through the savage destruction of the ghettos\, arrest\, and internment in Gestapo prisons and concentration camps\, and for a lucky few\, like Renia\, who orchestrated her own audacious escape from a brutal Nazi jail\, into the late 20th century and beyond.\nPowerful and inspiring\, The Light of Days is an unforgettable true tale of war\, the fight for freedom\, exceptional bravery\, female friendship\, and survival in the face of staggering odds.–(Publisher’s blurb) \nEmail requests for the Zoom link should be sent to adulted@tba-ny.org by March 18.

DESCRIPTION:Antiquities by Cynthia OzickLloyd Wilkinson Petrie\, one of the seven elderly trustees of the now defunctÉTemple Academy for Boys\, is preparing a memoir of his days at the school\, intertwined with the troubling distractions of present events. As he navigates\, with faltering recall\, between the subtle anti-Semitism that pervaded the schoolÕs ethos and his fascination with his own familyÕs heritageÐin particular\, his illustrious cousin\, the renowned archaeologist Sir William Matthew Flinders PetrieÐhe reconstructs the passions of a childhood encounter with the oddly named Ben-Zion Elefantin\, a mystifying older pupil who claims descent from EgyptÕs Elephantine Island. From this seed emerges one of Cynthia OzickÕs most wondrous tales\, touched by unsettling irony and the elusive flavor of a Kafka parable\, and weaving\, in her own distinctive voice\, myth and mania\, history and illusion. DESCRIPTION:THIS MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE ON ZOOM.  LINKS WILL BE SENT VIA EMAIL. \nFlorence Adler Swims Forever by Rachel Beanland \nThe title of [this] novel leads readers to believe they are cracking the spine of a light beach read about a bygone era. The first few chapters reward these expectations\, as the reader is immersed in the world of 1930’s Atlantic City. Yet the book soon takes a turn\, tackling emotional themes and a storyline that becomes increasingly complex by the page.\nWhat makes this novel fascinating is there are not many stories depicting Jewish immigrants already living for a generation in America in 1934. The novel centers on a Jewish family no longer struggling to assimilate\, but rather dealing with the challenges of economic survival\, antiSemitism\, and intermarriage.–Jewish Book Council \nEvery summer Esther and Joseph Adler rent their house out to vacationers escaping to ‘America’s Playground’ and move into the small apartment above the bakery…where they raised their 2 daughters\, Fannie and Florence. Florence\, home from college\, is determined to train to swim the English Channel\, while Fannie remains on bedrest until the end of her pregnancy. The Adlers have also taken in a mysterious young woman whom they recently helped emigrate from Nazi Germany.\nTragedy strikes\, and Esther decides to hide the truth until Fannie’s baby is born. DESCRIPTION:Send for Me by Lauren Fox \nSend for Me is an intergenerational story about the love and pain passed down among women of four generations\, holding close to one another during times of unimaginable fear and grief. The novel is centered on Annelise\, a young woman living in Feldenheim\, Germany\, with her loving parents\, Klara and Julius.  Moving between Germany on the eve of World War II and present-day Wisconsin\, it unspools a thread of love\, longing\, and the powerful bonds of family. \nDiscussion led by congregant Linda Gerstman

DESCRIPTION:Note: Selection has changed! \nThe Jew Store by Stella Suberman \nThe Jew Store is that rare thing – an intimate family story that sheds new light on a piece of American history. With a novelist’s sense of scene\, suspense\, and\, above all\, characterization\, Stella Suberman turns the clock back to a time when rural America was more peaceful but no less prejudiced\, when educated liberals were suspect\, and when the Klan was threatening to outsiders. In that setting she brings to life her remarkable father\, a man whose own brand of success proves that intelligence\, empathy\, liberality\, and decency can build a home anywhere. \nDiscussion led by congregant Linda Gerstman

DESCRIPTION:Up From Orchard Street by Eleanor Widmer\n“The story of three generations of the Roth family\, who live together in a crowded tenement at 12 Orchard Street on the Lower East Side. … We live through the bittersweet world of these blunt\, earthy\, feisty people for whom poverty was endemic\, illness common\, crises frequent\, and zest for living intense. Money may have been short\, but opinions were not\, and their tart tongues and lively humor invest every page. In this riveting story lies the heart of the American immigrant experience: a novel at once wise\, funny\, poignant\, anguishing\, exultant-and bursting with love.” – Jewish Book Council \nDiscussion led by congregant Linda Gerstman

DESCRIPTION:All Who Go Do Not Return\, by Shulem Deen \nShulem Deen\, a member of the Skverers\, an insular Hasidic sect in the United States\, has been raised to believe that questions are dangerous and\, therefore\, not to be asked in any form. At age 18 he marries\, an arranged marriage as is the custom\, and soon finds he is the father of several children. But Shulem wants more from life-he is curious\, and it is this curiosity\, encouraged in the outside world but shunned in his\, that begins his dangerous descent. First is the use of the radio\, then a trip to the library and then the use of the internet. All these experiences lead him to begin questioning his religious beliefs and  ultimately his own faith.  Considered a heretic by the standards of his community if his behavior is discovered\, he considers a life of deception while struggling to hold on to those he most loves\, his 5 children. A memoir\, this story  reveals how the author bravely deals with his loss of his faith.\n\nIf you did not receive the Zoom link via email\, please contact the office to register for this session: (914) 631-1770 or info@tba-ny.org.

DESCRIPTION:This month’s read: “House on Endless Waters” by Emuna Elon \nAt the behest of his agent\, renowned author Yoel Blum reluctantly agrees to visit his birthplace of Amsterdam to promote his books\, despite promising his late mother that he would never return to that city. While touring the Jewish Historical Museum with his wife\, Yoel stumbles upon footage portraying prewar Dutch Jewry and is astonished to see the youthful face of his beloved mother staring back at him\, posing with his father\, his older sister…and an infant he doesn’t recognize. \nThis unsettling discovery launches him into a fervent search for the truth\, shining a light on Amsterdam’s dark wartime history – the underground networks that hid Jewish children away from danger and those who betrayed their own for the sake of survival. The deeper into the past Yoel digs to tell the story of his life\, the better he understands his mother’s silence\, and the more urgent the question that has unconsciously haunted him for a lifetime – Who am I? – becomes.\n– Publisher’s summary \nIf you did not receive the link by email\, please contact the office to register for this session: (914) 631-1770 or info@tba-ny.org.“
