Books & More

May 9, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Join us for a moderated discussion about books with Jewish themes.Free for members, $3.00 for guestsRSVP: (914) 631-1770 adulted@tba-ny.org
This month: What makes food “Jewish”? Is it the ingredients? The manner in which the
food is prepared? Is it the directions? Is it the traditions associated with the
food? Is it a family recipe? What makes it specifically “Jewish”?
To answer these questions, select a cookbook noted as “Jewish”. Examine
its contents-the recipes themselves: the ingredients, the directions, any hints to
make the outcomes more desirable, the manner in which they are presented,
any photos to give you an idea of how the final results should look. Does the
author give any historical background? Is there something in the directions or
the recipe that is particularly Jewish? Are Jewish recipes more complicated
than others? Must the directions be followed in a specific way?
PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF YOUR FINDINGS AND BRING THEM WITH THE
BOOK TO OUR MEETING.
We will discuss your results and compare and contrast the styles and content of
your book selection with one another. Shall we come to a definite response to our
initial question?
OPTIONAL:Make one of the recipes in your book and bring to our discussion to
share with everyone. It should be simple and of the finger food type. You might
use it to demonstrate your conclusion as to what makes food “Jewish”.
Coffee, tea and water will be available as will paper goods.
